What's New!
School’s out and Summer Camp is right around the corner…
Summer camp begins on June 16 and runs through August 15. Co-directed by Kirsten Wimp and Mark Sharea, both Carden teachers, the camp will be open to children entering Kindergarten through the Fifth Grade. Older children are invited to apply for junior counselor positions. The camp has a safe and intimate feeling, with a low camper to counselor ratio. We take weekly afternoon field trips to the beach, Simpkins Swim Center, and theme-based destinations. Mornings will be filled with hands-on science and math activities, outdoor games, and crafts. Camp hours are 8:00-4:30. Click on the summer camp icon on our home page or call 460-2600 for more information.
Our 8th annual Play Day, hosted by P.E. teacher Joshua Hathaway, must have been one of the best ever. The Slip n’ Dip, dunk tank, watermelon eating contest, water balloon toss, tug of war, balloon shaving event, and Chill Out Café were a huge hit! Thank you to all of the parents, family, and friends who helped to make this fun day possible for our students.
Calling All Talent…
This year’s Talent Show, hosted by our Student Government Team, was an opportunity for students and teachers of all ages and abilities to show off their talents. We shared many laughs, cheers, and a few tears, as we watched the children and teachers perform. We had tap dancers, singers, comedians, gymnasts, poets, and hip hop dancers gracing the stage. Congratulations to all our brave and talented participants!
Keeper of the Tales
Our annual spring theatrical performance was held on the school’s outdoor stage on May 23. Drama teacher, Sherri Alejandro, and her cast of Kindergarten through Eighth grade students reenactedseveral of the classical tales of 1001 Arabian Nights. Stories of honesty, loyalty, and honor filled the air, as family and friends sat on the lawn, picnicking and watching their beloved children performing.
Havana Noches
Our fifth annual Carden Garden Party, themed as a night in Havanna, was a smashing success. Over 100 parents, teachers, family, and friends joined the Silver Backs live band, and local Latin dancers for an evening of fun food, music, dance, and silent and live auctions. Look for our donor recognition in local publications.
8th Grade Trip to Washington, DC
For the third year, our 8th grade class joined our sister school’s 8th graders for a six-day trip to Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, and Washington, DC to learn about the early days of our nation’s history. Some of the trip highlights were the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, the Jefferson Memorial, the Holocaust Museum, Mount Vernon, and laying the wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.
Spring Concert
Our annual Spring Concert on May 2, conducted and directed by our talented music teacher, Colin Hannon, featured songs from around the world. We traveled from Beliz to Lithuania, then France, and back to Mexico, during the afternoon of music, joy, and community.
Jim Weiss, Storyteller
On April 23, famed storyteller, Jim Weiss joined our students, parents, and teachers for a full day of storytelling. A master historian and story weaver, Mr. Weiss brought history alive with stories of Michelangelo, Sherlock Holmes, and ancient Greek tales including
the Tortoise and the Hare.
7th Grade Trip to Catalina Island Marine Institute
During the week of April 21, our 7th grade students joined our sister school’s 7th graders on a week-long trip to the Catalina Island Marine Institute. Their adventures involved a plane, bus, boat, and kayaks, to name only the vessels in which they traveled. In Catalina, the students snorkled, studied marine vertebrates and invertebrates, dissected a squid, and learned how to conduct field investigations.
